Call of Duty MMO: Fact or Fiction?

Rumors suggest that Infinity Ward is staffing up in order to develop an MMOG based on the Call of Duty license.

This one’s a doozy. Infinity Ward is allegedly recruiting new staff from the likes of Sony Online Entertainment with a view to developing a new massively multiplayer game based on its highly popular Call of Duty franchise. According to a rumor-riddled article read over on D’toid, the shooter dev might also be getting a hand from Blizzard too.

We’ve gotten word that IW is hiring people from Sony Online Entertainment, one of which may be the lead designer of EverQuest II, and that a member of Blizzard employees may also be involved to help Infinity Ward get this new title off the ground. Our Intel seems to indicate that Call of Duty will continue as an annual franchise while IW runs this MMO alongside it.

This rumor came in after a different rumor (surfacing yesterday on VG247) did the rounds which stated that Infinity Ward might not be working on Modern Warfare 3. We’ll keep you posted.

Modern Warfare 2 – AMAZING Knife Throw

First ever Modern Warfare 2 Tournament a disaster

Just a day ago it was reported that Modern Warfare 2 smashed sales records all across the globe in a matter of hours. The most anticipated game of the year had certainly got off to a great start but at the Newbury Racecourse hundreds of gamers would beg to disagree. Advertised as the first ever Modern Warfare 2 tournament in the world, this would be the first of many competitive Modern Warfare 2 tournaments. Held at the famous i-series LAN, organizers Multiplay were confident that this was going to be a success story from the start. Signing a deal with Activision to hold this tournament, the community was geared up for the prospect of a great competitive game and a decent prize purse.

Russia Bans Modern Warfail 2

As everybody knows by now, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 includes an incredibly controversial level set in a Russian airport that has generated much discussion. The level has proven to be so inflammatory that the real-life Russia has acted, recalling all copies of the game from stores and effectively banning the title.

Infinity Ward has opted to patch the level out entirely for Russian consumers, and an edited version of the game is expected to be re-released in less than a month, pending government approval. Even that may not pass, however, considering the entire game is based around a war between the US and Russian forces.

Russian gamers are apparently very unhappy with the game’s content. One Web site, GotPS3, railed against Infinity Ward for catering to an American audience and ignoring the sensitivities of other cultures. The site believes that Infinity Ward portrays the Russians as terrorists.

This is seriously quite pathetic. I am sure Russians would have had no problem if it was another country involved in the game’s plot, like Germany, which has of course been the antagonist in most Call of Duty games. Anybody who pays attention to MW2’s plot will understand why Russia is at war with the US, and know that the Russians aren’t being depicted solely as bad guys.

But still, these are videogames, right? No need to actually research and contextualize those at all, not when there are kneejerk reactions to be had.

Modern Warfare 2 – Modders make dedicated servers!

*NOTE: It is very possible you may be banned by VAC for attempting any of this. You have been warned…ok, that said…

Looks like the folks over at Teknogods have done it – or as close to have “done it” as we have gotten so far. They have created a co-op loader that allows a dedicated* server to be used instead of a local host set-up.

This “work around” essentially, enables a listen server, and lets a client connect to an arbitrary IP like 1.2.3.4, for spec-ops mode only.

Read the details here:
Source

Six days after release, it looks like there has been a successful attempt at arriving at a community based hack of IW.net.

Is this truly a dedi-server?

*Note that, in some people’s lexicon, a dedicated server should not require a graphics card and it should be pointed out that in the Teknogods setup…a graphics card is required for the host server. If you choose to use the latter definition (dedi server = no-gfx card) , then the community might be some days away from that realization.

Realizing the “true” definition of dedi-servers might be difficult; however, there is hope given the following dvars found in the game’s .exe:

badhost_endGameIfISuck “1″
badhost_minPercentClientsUnhappyToSuck “0.51″
badhost_minTotalClientsForHappyTest “3″

…it would appear, that you could theoretically lock the server down to one specific host by simply turning off “endGameIfISuck”. This way, the server would not get migrated. Underscore “theoretically”.

Modern Warfare 2 – DVAR List

The complete dvar list dump from MW2 follows:

Download

Thanks to PST*Joker, who was one of the first to crack this nut:

http://www.mycallofduty.com/MW2/console_mp.log

As usual, the abbreviations in the file are as follows:

A = AI (used in single player mode)
C = Cheat protected
R = Read only
L = Localized warnings, strings, etc.
I = Internet setting

Note: there are no more S = Server annotations for obvious reasons. There are no servers.

Modern Warfare 2 – Online ping monitoring

In competitive gaming circles, having greater than 30ms difference between teams on a server was ruled an “unfair server”, so it is interesting to read the truth about pings in the online MW2 experience.

The truth was supposed to be that the IW.net experience was going to be far superior than the one getting on dedicated servers. Far from it in my opinion. Now we have some numbers to back up that opinion.

SarahB on IW’s official forums (source) has given us all a way to better monitor your online ping. Here is her technique:

Navigate to the folder: ‘program files\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players’ and open the file config_mp.cfg

Change scoresping_interval from 100 to 20, and maxbars from 4 to 10 (10 is the max).

This means that each of the 10 bars represents 20ms, with full green being 20ms or lower, and 1 red being 200ms or higher.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:

WHAT HOST ADVANTAGE LOOKS LIKE:
http://img52.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=hostadvantage1.jpg

The sad truth? You might wanna pound a few beers before you read this:

• The host is immediately obvious, he’s the guy with 0-20 ping (full green).
• Most people usually connect with about 101-200+ms.
• Most people are connected at 200+ms (3 or less bars on normal cfg settings).
• On regular cfg settings, 4 bars means up to 0-100 ping, 3 bars 101-200, 2 bars 201-300, 1 bar is 301+.

Hosting Issues

Note that the maximum players you can host apparently depends on your upload speeds. From [3rdArmy]CW-4, who found this in a dvar dump (thanks Garetjax for the heads-up):

band_12players “384k”
band_18players “580k”
band_2players “64k”
band_4players “128k”
band_8players “256k”

The “580K” refers to the upload speed. Just FYI, most of you out there have 384k.

Modern Warfare 2 – Hacks

No less than 24 hours and we got hackers. So, how do we ban em? Oh wait! We Can’t, Epic Fail IW!

Call of Duty: Modern Lagfest

Modern Warfare 2 – Dedicated servers where are you?

Well it won’t be long till our COD4 community modders find out a way to crack this bad boy and bring the community what they’ve wanted right from the start. DEDICATED SERVERS!

Modern Warfare 2 Already Hacked?

Hackers have apparently made short work of Infinity Ward’s much-ballyhooed IWNet system, at least on the PC. The website, Call Of Duty Hacks, has posted a YouTube video showing a ranked PC match, with the player utilizing a vast array of cheat methods. Aim bots and being able to see through walls are just two of the major advantages given to the apparent cheater.

Of course, the hackers aren’t just doing it for the love of the game. The site charges a $20 (!) monthly fee for access to their hacking prowess.

There are a few levels of stupidity going on here. First of all, giving money (especially credit card info) to hackers is probably not a good idea. Secondly, I’m pretty sure that this sort of play is relatively easy to spot on Infinity Wards’ end, and you’ll probably find yourself with a full stat reset (or ban) before you know it. And lastly, it’s a game, people. One of the most compelling parts of the multiplayer is leveling up, unlocking new weapons, titles and emblems. Cheating basically removes that feeling of progression, as if you hit a button on your keyboard and hit level 70 in “WarCraft” instantly.

But hey, it’s your money and you have the right to spend it in the dumbest way possible. That’s the sort of principle that America is founded on.

On the bright side, the hackers seem to be limited to the PC version at the moment, so no need to fear, console users. Unfortunately, PS3 owners may have bigger problems which will hopefully be fixed by Friday.
